Why is the Talmud written in Aramaic?

01.02.16

Question

Hello rabbi. I have 3 questions: 1. Why is the Talmud written in Aramaic and not Hebrew? 2. How is it that the letters in Aramaic are similar to Hebrew letters and both languages are similar to each other (we’re lucky, otherwise it would have been much more difficult to study Talmud)? 3. Are there still people who speak Aramaic?

Answer

Aramaic was the language spoken in Babylon, so the Talmud was written in that language.

Aramaic is not written with Hebrew letters. The Jewish people wrote Aramaic in Hebrew letters.

There are groups of Arameans in Iraq and in other countries who still speak Aramaic.
