Obstetric ultrasonography in pregnancy

11.05.16

Question

Should one perform obstetric ultrasonography in pregnancy or is it better to avoid it? Does this test have a benefit for the fetus and mother? Thanks in advance.

Answer

There are tests that are beneficial, like checking the heart’s functioning, etc. All these things prepare the medical staff so they will know what to do at the moment of birth if and when there is a heart problem or anything that can be fixed immediately after birth.

But the deeper obstetric ultrasonography that is done in early pregnancy is usually unnecessary and there is no need for it and it just causes unnecessary worries.

There is no known risk to the fetus or the mother from these tests. However, the opinion of the Lubavitcher Rebbe was that a ultrasound causes damage to the fetus.
