Conversion to another Religion

29.02.16

Question

A question that came up in our Jewish community of Paris: a Jewish woman converted to another religion and then she subsequently bore children. What is her status and the status of her children as she has returned to her Jewish roots?

Answer

Shalom u’vracha,
Her status was and remains as 100% Jewish. Even while she “converted” to another religion this does not change.  A person who is born Jewish can never lose his/her Jewish status. It goes without saying that her children are also 100% Jewish in every way. When Jews return to Jewish living after having lived as “converts” to another faith, they should immerse in a mikveh and there are those that have the custom to shave.
All the best
