Seven Days of Mourning

07.06.17

Question

My brother, who converted to Christianity, passed away. Do I need to sit shiva (seven days of mourning) for him? Can I say Kaddish for him (a prayer for the deceased)?

Answer

You should not sit shiva for your brother who converted (See Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah 345:5).
You can say Kaddish for the elevation of your brother’s soul, and it would be very beneficial for him. (Yevia Omer Vol. 6, Yoreh Deah:36).
