Question

I would like to know more about the meaning of the Art of the Scroll painting entitled.. The Temple Descends From On High. It further states "This piece was painted to describe an ethereal feeling of G‑d causing the Holy Temple to descend from the Heavens to the mountains of Jerusalem." Please explain further the meaning & message behind the art. So, does it mean that when the temple descends from heaven .., will it land here on earth and cover the entire State/Country of Israel? Or, further? Does the temple represent heaven on earth? Please elaborate. Thank you.

Answer

To the Questioner,

1. Will it land here on earth?

Yes. (Tosfot Succah 41a).

2. ...and cover the entire State/Country of Israel?

No. It's positioning will be the similar to the first two Jewish Temples in Jerusalem, located specifically on Temple Mount.

3. Does the temple represent heaven on earth?

It represents the geographic point in the world where our prayers ascend to the heavens, and where the Presence of G-d is most felt during the time that the Temple is standing.
