Besamim by Havdalah
Question: I had a cold last week and was very stuffy or a few days. When it came Motzei Shabbat time to make Havdalah I wasn’t sure I could say a bracha on the Besamim. At that point my nose somewhat clear but I still could not smell half the time. I told my wife to make the bracha, but could I have made the bracha hoping that I would be able to smell it?
Bedikat Chametz on time
Question: I’m an accountant and Pesach always falls out around tax season, the busiest time of the year. I usually have to stay late hours in the office to make parnassa for the year. I take of all the time I can for Pesach but when it comes to Leil Bedikat Chametz I can’t make it home in time for Tzeit Hakochavim. (It is either that day or a work on Chol HaMoed.) Should I make a shliach to-do the bedikah for me at the correct time, or should I just wait until I get home?
Chametz being watched by someone else over Pesach
Question: My friend started making an Oneg Shabbat in the Bet Knesset including some Chametz stuff like pretzels and beer. He was storing the stuff by my house. We both forgot about it until after Pesach. I even cleaned there but since it was his stuff, I didn’t really pay attention to what was there. Was the stuff considered Chametz Sheavar Alav Hapesach. Did either of us transgress Bal Yeraeh.
Birkat Hatorah for Girls
Question: To the Rabbi: I am in Bet Yaakov and before we start the Tefilla h of the day the teacher says a Dvar Torah for Chizuk or a story or something like that. It occurred to me that we don’t say Birkat Hatorah until we start the Tefilla so maybe this is not allowed. Do we need to say Birkat Hatorah on Chizuk?
Question: To the Rav: We have a family of sixteen kids and one on the way, Baruch Hashem BLi Ayin Hara. Purim is approaching and my budget is a little tight this year. Usually the expenses on Purim are astronomical and I need to cut down somewhere. My wife feels that we put as much effort as possible into making Purim fun for the kids, so she asked if maybe I could cut down on the Machatzit HaShekel. It is only a minhag and it ends up costing alt. How much do I actually have to give?
Eating before reading the Megillah
Question: To the Rabbi: I live in a small Jewish community with one Bet Knesset in the area. On Purim, we have one reading at night and one in the morning for everyone. Small as it is, our community makes the reading very exciting and the kids really get into banging for Haman and it’s a lot of fun. The issue I have, I am a little bit older and with all the fun the reading takes a long time and it is hard for me to fast until the end of the reading. May I eat something before the Kriah so I can pay attention the whole way through?
