An Island of Shabbat in a Sea of Politics

The Saban Forum organized by Haim Saban, is an annual dialogue between American and Israeli leaders from across the political and social spectrum, organized by the Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution. (From Brookings’ website)

Among the many prominent people there was a contingent of high ranking Jews who keep Shabbat. These included Senator Joe Lieberman, Former Israeli Supreme Court Justice Elyakim Rubinstein, businessman David Hager, MK Elazar Stern and more.

David Hagar organized the kosher accommodations in the hotel that hosted the event in Washington, DC. There were many Jews attending who hold or have held senior positions in the US Government. One of the more climactic moments was an interview that Haim Saban had with Jared Kushner.

The joint prayers and Shabbat meals of the Shabbat observers was not lost on the many participants of the forum. It was an island of Shabbat in a sea of politics and G-d’s name was sanctified by those Shabbat observant participants.
