Major Jerusalem Construction and Transportation Project Inaugurated

A cornerstone-laying ceremony for the Jerusalem western entrance project was held, attended by Minister of Transport Yisrael Katz, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, and Minister of Environmental Protection Zeev Elkin.

Two years ago, the housing cabinet approved the project, which will cover  52.75 acres around the Jerusalem Convention Hall. The Jerusalem Center Development Company is responsible for overall management of the project, and Moriah Jerusalem Development Corporation is responsible for its engineering management.

The project, which is planned to be finished in 8 years, includes the construction of 14 skyscrapers with at least 24-floors each and nine buildings with 36-floors containing hotels, industrial, commercial, entertainment, and leisure space. The Jerusalem Convention Hall will be renovated and expanded.

The project includes major transportation changes, including the digging of a tunnel under Shazar Blvd. for a five-storey parking lot, and two light railways stations. One will connect to the existing line and another to the new 19.5 kilometer Green Line. This line will connect Gilo in the southeast with Mt. Scopus by way of Givat Ram and Bar Ilan St. and will carry 150,000 passengers daily starting in 2023.
