Tzitzit and Clothes of a Kohen

12.02.19

Question

It says in Parshat Tetzaveh the clothing of the Cohen Gadol and ordinary cohanim but it does not mention tzitzit. Did they wear tzitzit when serving in the mishkan or Beit Hamikdosh?

Answer

To the Questioner,

Tzitzit is an obligation to add to an article of clothing that has four corners (Devarim 22:12).

Also, it is only an obligation for an article of clothing that is "your personal clothing" (Ibid).

Sorce: Minchat Chinuch, Mitzva 99.

Since none of the clothes of the ordinary Kohanim had four corners, and since the clothes of the Kohanim were property of the Bet Hamikdash, they were not obligated in Tztzit.

With blessings,
Rav Nachum
