A chazon filming himself saying Selichot

06.09.18

Question

The rabbi of our shul set up his smartphone to record our synagogue chazon reciting Selichot and the chazon was able to see himself on the screen throughout the Selichot. Is this permitted?

Answer

It is not forbidden according to Jewish law as long as it doesn’t disturb the chazon from concentrating on the Selichot. However, when he bows down, he should be careful not to do so in front of the screen because it will look like he is bowing down to his own image. (See Mishna Berura 90:71).
