The Ten Commandments:

  1. I am Hashem, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt - Belief in God.

  2. You shall have no other gods before me. Do not make for yourself an idol - Prohibition of idolatry.

  3. Do not take the name of Hashem, your God, in vain - Prohibition of using Hashem's name in vain.

  4. Remember the Shabbat day to keep it holy - Observance of Shabbat.

  5. Honor your father and your mother - The commandment of honoring parents.

  6. You shall not murder.

  7. You shall not commit adultery.

  8. You shall not steal.

  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor - Prohibition of false testimony.

  10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house.

The central belief in Jewish faith holds that the entire Torah was given to Moses by Hashem directly. With this understanding, we ask: Why were the Ten Commandments distinguished from other commandments, given that they alone were etched onto the Tablets of the Covenant that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai, and why were they the first commandments revealed to the Israelites after this significant event? Our sages addressed these questions and offered two main reasons:

    1) The Ten Commandments serve as general categories from which all other commandments are derived. As Rashi wrote, "All 613 commandments are encapsulated in the Ten Commandments..."

    2) The Ten Commandments form a foundational theological and social framework necessary for all other mitzvot mentioned in the scriptures. Those who worship false gods or deny Hashem's existence are unlikely to observe mitzvot like wearing tefillin or waving the four species on Sukkot. Similarly, commandments involving interpersonal relationships, as presented in the Ten Commandments, are vital, since societies marred by murder, family dissolution, or miscarriages of justice through false testimony cannot maintain the social order necessary for the world’s sustainability. Such chaos leads to societal ruin.

It is vital to reiterate that the Ten Commandments are not more important than other mitzvot, as Hashem commanded all equally. They appeared on the Tablets of the Covenant for the reasons mentioned, and here we will further explain the rationale behind each commandment:

I am Hashem, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt: Rabbi Mordechai Neugershel expressed that starting the commandments with "I" signifies the birth of a moral plumb line that should guide all actions, beliefs, and thoughts."

This verse not only informs us that Hashem freed us from Egypt, it also contains a command, one of the 613 mitzvot, as emphasized by Rambam, "We are commanded to acknowledge divinity..."

This first commandment carries an additional mandate: to acknowledge Hashem's existence as the cause and sustainer of the universe, which He created. Similarly, Ramban noted in his commentary the imperative implicit in this declaration: "I am Hashem" - affirming the requirement to believe in a singular, eternal God responsible for all.

You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness which is in the heavens above, or on the earth below, or in the water beneath the earth. Do not bow to them or serve them because I am Hashem, your God: After declaring Hashem as the sole God who liberated the Israelites from Egypt, this commandment prohibits all forms of idol worshiping or any attempt to physically represent Hashem.

Do not take Hashem's name in vain: Speaking Hashem's name should always be purposeful - in blessings, prayers, and Torah studies. Using it needlessly contravenes Torah law. As Ramban elaborated, the prohibition extends to any idle use of God’s revered name.

Remember the Shabbat day to keep it holy: Work six days, but the seventh day is a Shabbat to Hashem. The reasoning here includes the coinciding creation narrative, stressing the divine rest on the seventh day as a pattern for Jewish observance.

A social reason for Shabbat's observance is highlighted elsewhere: "Remember you were a slave in Egypt, hence Hashem freed you. Thus, Shabbat is a sign of liberation from bondage, offering rest and dignity to all.

Honor your father and your mother: The bond between parents and children sustains the Jewish tradition. The respect for our forebears secures the nation's continuity, teaching and passing down religious truths and cultural legacy.

You shall not murder: Created in the image of God, human life holds unparalleled sanctity. Murder not only undermines social order but assaults the divine image inherent in every person.

You shall not commit adultery: The marital bond, established by Hashem, upholds family sanctity. Adultery breaches this sacred boundary and destabilizes the social fabric built on fidelity.

You shall not steal: As explained by sages, this commandment focuses primarily on kidnapping, as this act infringes upon personal freedom, often intertwined with human trafficking.

You shall not bear false witness: Honest courts hinge on truthful testimonies, crucial to justice. Bearing false witness leads to false judgments, eroding social integrity.

You shall not covet: Rambam emphasized refraining from schemes to acquire others' possessions, even through purchase. Preserving inner contentment protects societal harmony.

The wisdom "Sefer HaChinuch" notes the harmful desires that coveting incites could lead to coercion or violence, as the biblical story of Naboth showed.

The Israeli Ministry of Diaspora Affairs has halted the operations of more than three dozen humanitarian organizations in Gaza today, including Doctors Without Borders, after determining they failed to meet new registration requirements for non-governmental organizations operating there.

The ministry said Tuesday that 38 NGOs did not have their permits renewed for the coming year under guidelines posted online in November. The new rules require organizations providing humanitarian assistance in Gaza to submit detailed documentation, including a full list of Palestinian employees.

Israel said the move is intended to prevent Hamas from exploiting humanitarian aid. “We emphasize that the registration process is intended to prevent the exploitation of aid by Hamas, which in the past operated under the cover of certain international aid organizations, knowingly or unknowingly,” wrote the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, known as COGAT, which oversees humanitarian coordination in Gaza.

According to Israeli officials, the impact on aid deliveries will be minimal. The IDF has approved 24 organizations to continue operating in Gaza, including American and Christian groups as well as international NGOs from Europe and Asia. Israel says these approved organizations account for 99% of the total humanitarian aid volume entering Gaza, while the suspended groups represent about 1%. COGAT said many of the affected NGOs had already faced restrictions during the war and that the decision “will not result in any future harm to the volume of humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip.”

The suspensions drew public backing from Mike Huckabee, saying “An ongoing scandal ignored by UN & European enablers shows why ⁦Israel⁩ has to decertify some of the NGOs who have terrorists on their payroll,” Huckabee wrote.

Humanitarian organizations and international bodies have sharply criticized Israel’s new registration rules. Aid groups operating in Gaza have said Israel has continued to block humanitarian assistance as storms and flooding have worsened conditions for residents in recent weeks. Earlier this month, Doctors Without Borders warned in a blog post that the new guidelines “risk leaving hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza without lifesaving healthcare in 2026.”

The United Nations Humanitarian Country Team also condemned the requirements, saying aid groups had warned they were “vague, politicised and impossible to meet without breaching humanitarian principles.”

Israeli officials rejected those claims, stressing that the registration rules are technical and security-focused. COGAT said the government decision was designed to safeguard aid channels while ensuring assistance continues to reach civilians in Gaza.

Terror Attacks in Judea and Samaria Drop Sharply in 2025
Security data shows fewer attacks and fatalities compared to previous years, as IDF operations and expanded freedom of action reshape the northern Samaria arena

A year-end security summary shows a sharp decline in Palestinian terror activity in Judea and Samaria in 2025, with both fatalities and the number of attacks falling significantly compared to the previous two years.

According to a report by Kan News analyst Roy Sharon, citing security establishment data, 20 people were killed in terror attacks in Judea and Samaria in 2025. The figure marks a notable decrease from 34 fatalities in 2024 and 41 in 2023, reflecting a sustained downward trend in lethal attacks in the arena.

The drop in fatalities was accompanied by a steep fall in the overall number of attacks. Security data indicates that 60 significant attacks, defined as rammings, stabbings, and shootings, were carried out in Judea and Samaria during 2025. By comparison, 250 such attacks were recorded in 2024. The figures point to a dramatic contraction in the operational capacity of terror networks operating in the area.

Officials also noted a shift in the nature of attacks. Most incidents this year involved knives and vehicle rammings, while fewer attacks were carried out using firearms. The pattern suggests reduced access to weapons, even as attempted attacks continued.

The decline is attributed primarily to intensified Israeli security operations, particularly in northern Samaria. Over the past year, the Israel Defense Forces took control of several refugee camps in the region and carried out sustained operations against local terror battalions. According to the assessment cited by Kan, roughly 200 wanted terror suspects were active in these camps a year ago. That number has since dropped to only dozens, following arrests, targeted operations, and the dismantling of armed cells.

Security officials also point to full freedom of action granted to Israeli forces across the Judea and Samaria sector as a central factor, which has allowed security forces to enter hotspots repeatedly, maintain a continuous presence, and disrupt terror infrastructures before attacks could be carried out.

An IDF operational assessment echoed that approach, emphasizing prevention as the guiding principle of current activity. “Your activity in the area directly prevents attacks in Israel’s rear,” IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said during a visit to the sector, according to an official statement.

Israeli officials say maintaining pressure on terror networks and preserving freedom of action will remain central to security policy in Judea and Samaria as 2026 begins.

Shin Bet Exposes Bedouins That Monitored IDF Radios to Smuggle Weapons
Four Israeli citizens allegedly ran a series of drone-based weapons smuggling attempts from the Egypt border, exploiting IDF communications to evade forces

Israeli security forces have uncovered a sophisticated weapons smuggling network operated by four Bedouin Israeli citizens who allegedly intercepted IDF radio communications to evade patrols while moving arms into Israel, the Israel Security Agency said Thursday.

The arrests were carried out about a month ago following a joint investigation by the Shin Bet, the Israel Police Southern District, and the IDF. On Thursday morning, the Southern District Prosecutor’s Office filed a serious indictment against the four in the Be’er Sheva District Court.

According to security officials, the suspects, residents of Mas’udin al-Azazmeh in the south, ran a series of smuggling attempts from the Egypt border using drones and real-time intelligence gathered by listening to IDF radio networks. Security officials say the exposure of the operation highlights a rare and severe threat of Israeli citizens allegedly assisting weapons flows that directly support terror activity.

Investigators said the cell relied on advanced methods to move weapons across the border, with drones playing a central role in relaying arms from Egypt into Israel. Officials said the suspects’ familiarity with the border area and IDF activity allowed them to choose routes and timing that reduced the risk of being detected.

A key element of the operation was the alleged interception of IDF radio communications during active missions. By listening to military traffic, the suspects were able to track troop movements in the area and adjust their smuggling runs in real time.

In one incident cited by security officials, IDF forces detected a drone crossing from the Egyptian border and brought it down. The drone was carrying four MAG machine guns that were en route into Israel. The foiled attempt, officials said, illustrates the scale and intent of the smuggling network.

Security officials described weapons smuggling across Israel’s borders as a “supply pipeline for terror organizations,” warning that such activity directly undermines state security. “This activity assists terror organizations and directly and significantly harms state security,” officials said.

In a joint statement, the Shin Bet, Israel Police, and the IDF said: “The activity of smuggling weapons across the country’s borders constitutes a supply pipeline for terror organizations, assists their activity, and can significantly harm state security.”

The statement added: “The Shin Bet, Israel Police and the IDF view with severity any involvement or assistance by Israeli citizens in terror activity and in the smuggling of weapons across the borders, which endanger state security, and will continue to act to thwart and bring those involved to justice.”

Hundreds of Thousands Rally for Gaza on New Year’s Day in Istanbul
Over 500,000 people march to the Galata Bridge in freezing weather, with civil groups and organizers calling for an end to the war in Gaza

More than 500,000 people took part in a massive pro-Gaza rally in Istanbul on New Year’s Day, marching through the city and converging on the Galata Bridge, according to police sources.

The demonstration unfolded in freezing temperatures, as crowds waved Palestinian and Turkish flags and filled major streets leading to the bridge. The scale of the turnout made the rally one of the largest public demonstrations held in Turkey in recent months, drawing participants from across the country.

The march was organized by a broad coalition of civil society groups, with organizers saying more than 400 organizations were involved. Demonstrators gathered in the early hours of the morning and moved toward the Galata Bridge, where the main rally and speeches were held. Banners and signs carried messages calling for an end to the fighting in Gaza and expressing solidarity with Palestinians.

At the center of the rally’s messaging was the slogan displayed prominently throughout the march and at the main stage: “We won’t cower, we won’t keep quiet, we won’t forget Palestine.” The phrase was chanted by participants as they crossed the bridge and assembled along the waterfront.

One of the organizers of the event was Bilal Erdogan, the youngest son of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He was present at the event and addressed participants from the stage. Speaking to the crowd, Erdogan framed the rally as a collective expression of solidarity and prayer at the start of the new year. “We are praying that 2026 will bring goodness for our entire nation and for the oppressed Palestinians,” he said.

The program at the Galata Bridge included speeches by organizers and representatives of participating groups, as well as a brief cultural segment. Lebanese-born singer Maher Zain performed his song “Free Palestine” as part of the rally, drawing cheers from the crowd gathered along the bridge and nearby streets.

Security forces were deployed in large numbers around the march route and rally site, but no incidents were reported. Police maintained a visible presence as crowds entered and exited the area, and the event concluded peacefully despite the size of the turnout. By midday, participants began dispersing from the Galata Bridge, with organizers hailing the rally as a demonstration of broad-based public engagement.

Dozens Killed in New Year’s Eve Fire at Swiss Ski Resort Bar
Authorities say blaze at crowded Crans-Montana venue triggered explosion with investigation underway as victims treated across Switzerland

Around 40 people were killed and about 100 others injured, most of them seriously, after a fire swept through a crowded bar during New Year’s Eve celebrations at the upscale Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, Swiss officials said Thursday. The deadly incident unfolded in the early hours of the morning.

The fire broke out at around 1:30 a.m. local time at Le Constellation, a popular venue in the resort. Authorities said the fire triggered an explosion inside the bar, compounding the damage and injuries. Swiss officials stressed that the incident is being treated as an accident, not a security-related or terror event.

“At the moment we are considering this a fire and we are not considering the possibility of an attack,” said Beatrice Pilloud, the Valais canton prosecutor, at a press conference announcing the opening of a full investigation.

Police have refrained from confirming a precise death toll, citing the severity of injuries and the difficulty of identifying victims. Frédéric Gisler, head of the Valais cantonal police, said “several tens of people” are presumed dead. Italy’s foreign ministry later said information from Swiss authorities indicated that around 40 people were killed.

“I can’t hide from you that we are all shaken by what happened overnight in Crans,” Gisler said. “Our count is about 100 injured, most seriously, and unfortunately tens of people are presumed dead.”

Hospitals across western Switzerland were quickly overwhelmed by the scale of the casualties. Regional officials said the intensive care unit at the local Valais hospital reached capacity within hours, forcing medical teams to transfer patients to facilities in Sion, Lausanne, Geneva, and Zurich. Many of the injured suffered severe burns, complicating treatment and identification efforts.

Emergency services mounted a large-scale response throughout the night. Authorities deployed 10 helicopters, 40 ambulances, and more than 100 first responders to evacuate victims and secure the area. Police sealed off the resort center and imposed a temporary no-fly zone over Crans-Montana to allow air evacuations to proceed unhindered. A reception center and helpline were set up for families seeking information about loved ones.

Pilloud said investigators have not yet been able to safely enter the burned-out structure. She urged the public and media to avoid speculation while forensic teams work to establish what happened. “I am asking everybody out of respect for the deceased and their families not to make any assumptions,” she said, adding that families are awaiting answers authorities cannot yet provide.

Swiss officials described the fire as a rapid and violent event. Firefighters used the term “generalized conflagration” to explain how intense heat can cause combustible gases to ignite suddenly, producing an explosion-like effect. Investigators said it remains too early to determine what sparked the initial fire.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani suggested that fireworks or a firecracker used during New Year’s celebrations may have played a role, but Swiss authorities emphasized that this remains unconfirmed and that no conclusions have been reached.

Switzerland’s Federal President Guy Parmelin expressed condolences in a social media post, calling the incident a national tragedy. “What was meant to be a moment of joy turned, on the first day of the year in Crans-Montana, into mourning that touches the entire country and far beyond,” he said. Out of respect for the victims, Parmelin postponed a New Year address scheduled for Thursday.

Crans-Montana is one of Switzerland’s best-known Alpine resorts and a major draw for international tourists during the winter holiday season. Local authorities urged residents and visitors to exercise caution in the coming days, warning that medical and emergency resources in the region remain strained as the investigation continues and the injured receive ongoing care.

[7
At New Year’s Event, Sydney Holds Memorial for Bondi Chanukah Victims
City pauses celebrations with minute of silence, white-lit Harbour Bridge and menorah tribute weeks after deadly antisemitic attack

Sydney entered the new year with a public memorial for the victims of the deadly Chanukah attack at Bondi Beach, pausing its globally known new year’s eve celebrations to honor the 15 people killed in the December 14 shooting.

At 11 p.m. local time, organizers called for a minute of silence across the city. As crowds gathered along the harbor, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was illuminated in white, and a menorah was projected onto its pylons, creating a visual centerpiece for the tribute. Many in attendance turned on their mobile phone flashlights as the city fell quiet ahead of the midnight fireworks.

This event is typically defined by spectacle, drawing international attention for fireworks that stretch across the harbor. This year, however, the tone was markedly different, with the memorial placed at the heart of the evening’s program.

In a video message released in connection with the New Year’s Eve commemorations, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the night reflected the country’s mixed emotions following the Bondi Beach attack. “Right now, the joy that we usually feel at the start of a new year is tempered by the sadness of the old,” Albanese said. He added that “our hearts ache for every life lost, and every life changed forever.”

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the tribute was intended to allow the city to come together after the violence. “After a tragic end to the year for our city, we hope that New Year’s Eve will provide an opportunity to come together and look with hope for a peaceful and happy 2026,” Moore said ahead of the ceremony.

Security was visibly heightened during the evening, with around 3,000 police deployed across Sydney, some carrying long arms, as authorities sought to reassure the public during one of the city’s largest annual gatherings.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said the city would not allow the attack to define its future. “We have to show defiance in the face of this terrible crime and say that we’re not going to be cowed by this kind of terrorism, and we’re not going to change the way we live our life in our beautiful city,” Minns said.

“Speak Up. Stand Up. Fight Back,” Netanyahu Tells Surfside Synagogue
Israeli prime minister delivers wide-ranging address on antisemitism, war, Jewish history, hostages, and U.S. support during rare appearance at Shul of Bal Harbour

Hundreds of people packed the Shul of Bal Harbour in Surfside, Florida, on Wednesday to hear Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu deliver a forceful address focused on strength, resolve, Jewish history, and the current war. The appearance marked Netanyahu’s first visit to South Florida as prime minister and his fifth trip to the United States this year.

The event drew senior Israeli and U.S. officials, including Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev, Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon, Israel’s Consul General in New York Ofir Akunis, and Israel’s Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter, alongside Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, Sen. Ashley Moody, and Rep. Carlos Giménez. The appearance was accompanied by extensive security measures and widespread traffic disruptions across Surfside and parts of Miami Beach. Roads were closed for hours, police and federal security forces were deployed around the synagogue, and long lines formed outside as attendees waited to enter under tight security protocols.

Netanyahu opened the core of his remarks with a direct call to action for American Jews in the face of antisemitism. The last thing you should do before antisemitic attacksis lower your head and seek cover,” he said. “That’s not what you should do. You should stand up and be counted. You should fight back.” He sharpened the message further, saying “you should delegitimize your delegitimizers,” Netanyahu said. “Nobody will fight for you more than you fight for yourself.”

From there, Netanyahu tied Israel’s security and prosperity to the need for strength. “Unity, strength and resolve, that’s what makes the difference,” he said, returning repeatedly to the idea that power and cohesion are prerequisites for peace. “It’s peace through strength,” he said. “It’s prosperity through strength.” He added, “When Israel is strong, others want to partner with us. You stand up and be counted, and you will see the difference. Don’t be afraid.”

Netanyahu then turned to Jewish history, describing its central tragedy of history being “exiled from our land.” “We lost strength, unity and resolve, and the consequences were horrific.” He continued: “We were expelled from land to land, we suffered pogroms, we suffered massacres, culminating in the greatest massacre of them all: the Holocaust, in which a third of our people were lost.”

Turning to the present, Netanyahu said “I say to the entire world: Never again,” he said. “Never again was last year, in which we demonstrated to the would-be destroyers of Israel, we shall destroy you. You shall not destroy us.”

Addressing the current war, Netanyahu said he pledged early on that Israel would change the Middle East. “On the second day of the war, I said that Israel would change the face of the Middle East,” he told attendees. “It was the bravery of our soldiers, the resolute stance of our people and the correct decisions that we took in the government that changed the face of battle and changed the face of the Middle East.”

Netanyahu also addressed the issue of hostages in Gaza, referring to the body of the last remaining hostage, Ran Gvili. “We shall return him and we’re working on it right now,” he said. “He shall be back. The first one in, last one out, but he’ll be back.”

A significant portion of the address focused on Israel’s relationship with the United States and American leadership. Netanyahu praised U.S. President Donald Trump, saying, “President Trump has been unflinching, consistent. He never wavers.” He added, “His instinctive support for the State of Israel, his understanding of what is right and what is just.” Netanyahu said the alignment between Washington and Jerusalem had tangible consequences. “That’s been there from day one, and we have shown what happens when the president of the United States and the prime minister of Israel have no daylight between them: Wonderful things. Wondrous things can happen.”

After the event concluded, protests were reported roughly a block away from the synagogue. No disruptions to the gathering itself were reported, and the visit ended without incident as Netanyahu continued his U.S. trip.

Iran Protests Enter Fourth Day as Arrests Mount and Unrest Spreads
Demonstrations sparked by currency collapse widen nationwide, drawing in university students as authorities deploy force, deny a reported death, and warn of decisive legal action

Nationwide protests across Iran entered a fourth day on Wednesday, after demonstrations sparked by a sharp currency collapse and soaring living costs expanded to include university students, workers, and broader sections of the public. Authorities responded with arrests, heavy security deployments, and warnings of a firm legal response as unrest showed no sign of easing.

The protests began over the weekend following the rial’s plunge to record lows against the U.S. dollar, rapidly eroding purchasing power and inflation exceeding 40 percent. What began as strikes by shopkeepers in Tehran’s commercial districts quickly spread to the streets, with demonstrations now reported across multiple regions of the country.

Universities have emerged as major flashpoints in the unrest. Student gatherings were reported at several campuses in Tehran, with videos circulating on social media showing demonstrators chanting anti-government slogans, confronting security forces, and dismantling signs linked to institutions associated with Iran’s leadership. Student outlets reported that one student at Tehran’s Amirkabir University was severely injured when members of the Basij militia, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, broke up a campus gathering.

At the University of Tehran, officials said several students were detained during protests but later released following intervention by university leadership. Two major universities in the capital announced that all remaining classes would be held online through the end of the semester, citing cold weather, energy shortages, and student welfare. In Mashhad, students at Ferdowsi University issued a statement calling for protests, declaring that universities should not be spaces of fear. Reports indicated that protest slogans in several locations went beyond economic demands, including chants of “death to the dictator.”

Tensions escalated further in the southern city of Fasa, where Iranian authorities reported that protesters damaged parts of the provincial governor’s office. Four suspects were arrested, and three police officers were injured. Officials insisted the unrest in the city was limited and under control.

Following the Fasa incident, security forces intensified their response in several areas. Residents described checkpoints, constant patrols, and a visible presence of both uniformed and plainclothes officers. Video footage and eyewitness accounts showed security forces firing tear gas and, in several locations, shooting toward protesters. Additional reports described the use of live rounds at some protest sites. Security vehicles were also deployed around major commercial hubs in Tehran, as authorities sought to deter further gatherings.

Conflicting accounts also emerged regarding a possible fatality. Some opposition-linked outlets and social media sources reported that an 18-year-old identified as Mahdi Samavati was killed by security forces’ gunfire. Iranian judicial officials and local authorities categorically denied that any protester had been killed, dismissing the reports as rumors. No independent confirmation of a death has been established.

Iran’s leadership delivered mixed messages as demonstrations continued. President Masoud Pezeshkian said he had instructed the interior minister to engage in dialogue with representatives of the protesters to hear their “legitimate demands.” Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani acknowledged widespread economic pressure and said peaceful protest is recognized under Iran’s constitution. At the same time, Interior Ministry officials framed the unrest as a test of social cohesion, while the prosecutor general separately warned that any attempt to turn economic protests into insecurity or damage to public property would be met with a “legal, proportionate and decisive” response.

The unrest was triggered by the rapid depreciation of the rial and mounting inflation, which have driven up the cost of food, medicine, and basic goods. Bazaar strikes and mall closures were followed by broader street protests, forcing the government to replace the central bank governor and declare widespread public office closures, officially citing energy shortages.

As night-time demonstrations continued and more businesses announced closures in solidarity, the protests appeared poised to carry on. With security forces on high alert and economic grievances unresolved, Iran now faces a delicate balancing act between dialogue, containment, and the risk of further escalation.

Massive Bank Vault Robbery Uncovered in Western Germany
Police estimate losses at around €30 million after thieves drilled into an underground vault and breached thousands of safe-deposit boxes

A large and sophisticated bank robbery was uncovered earlier in the week in the western German city of Gelsenkirchen, after burglars broke into an underground vault and stole valuables estimated by police at around €30 million.

The break-in was discovered shortly before dawn when a fire alarm was triggered at a local Sparkasse savings bank branch. Police and firefighters responding to the alert found a large hole drilled through a wall leading directly into the bank’s subterranean safe-deposit vault. Authorities said the scale and execution of the operation point to careful planning and professional tools.

According to police, the suspects used a heavy industrial drill to penetrate the vault and forcibly open more than 3,000 individual safe-deposit boxes. The boxes contained cash, jewelry, and gold belonging to private customers. A police spokesperson described the crime as highly sophisticated, saying it was “a very professionally carried out robbery.”

Investigators believe the perpetrators entered and exited the bank through a nearby parking garage, allowing them to move equipment and stolen items without drawing immediate attention. Witnesses reported seeing several men carrying large bags inside the garage during the night. Security cameras later captured a black Audi leaving the garage in the early morning hours.

Despite the extensive damage, police said no suspects have been arrested so far and the investigation remains ongoing. Officers are reviewing surveillance footage and collecting witness testimony as they work to identify those responsible.

The bank confirmed that approximately 95 percent of the safe-deposit boxes in the vault were breached during the robbery. In a statement to customers, the bank warned that the likelihood of individual losses is “very high.” It added that the contents of each box are insured up to €10,300, and advised customers to check whether they hold additional private insurance coverage for higher-value items.

Following the discovery, the branch was closed and an emergency hotline was established to handle customer inquiries. On Monday, police were deployed to secure the bank entrance after large numbers of customers gathered outside demanding information about their valuables.

“I couldn’t sleep all night. We’re getting no information,” one customer told Reuters while waiting outside the branch. He said the safe-deposit box he rented at the bank contained his savings for old age.

Authorities have not disclosed how long the suspects may have been inside the vault or how they transported the stolen property away from the scene. Police said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses and forensic work at the site is completed.

The incident is being treated as one of the most significant bank vault robberies uncovered in Germany in recent years, both in terms of the estimated value stolen and the scale of the breach.

Hamas Nears Decision on New Political Bureau Chief
Arab media report an internal vote within days as rival Gaza and overseas leaders compete to shape Hamas’ post-Sinwar direction

Hamas is set to decide on a new head of its political bureau within days, according to Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Akhbar. The vote would end the interim leadership phase put in place after the killing of Yahya Sinwar last October.

The decision marks Hamas’s most significant leadership move since Israeli strikes eliminated senior figures during the war. Arab media report the outcome could influence the group’s internal balance of power and its approach to the fighting and regional ties.

According to Al-Akhbar, Hamas moved quickly after Sinwar’s death by shifting decision-making from a single leader to a temporary collective leadership. The group shifted to a temporary “Leadership Council” led by Mohammed Darwish, head of the Shura Council, so it could continue functioning despite the loss of senior leaders. The report said Sinwar had previously supported this model, arguing that Hamas should keep operating even if top figures were targeted.

Al-Akhbar reported that the Leadership Council included Darwish as chair, with Khalil al-Hayya as deputy, alongside representatives for Hamas’ overseas leadership, the Judea and Samaria, and Gaza. The model was aimed to spread authority and ensure continuity during wartime.

That interim phase is now ending. Al-Akhbar said the Shura Council, the body responsible for choosing Hamas’ leadership, now has enough members present to formally hold a vote. With that threshold met, the report said an “internal competition” has intensified in recent days.

Arab coverage identifies two leading contenders. One is Khaled Mashal, a former head of Hamas’ political bureau who has long led the movement abroad. The other is Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas’ deputy leader in the Gaza Strip.

Asharq reported that al-Hayya is viewed internally as favoring the continuation of armed confrontation “until the war ends and Israeli forces withdraw,” while Mashal is associated with a line that emphasizes “negotiated compromises” and recalibrating Hamas’ regional relationships.

Al-Akhbar also reported that an attempt to settle internal disagreements failed. Under the proposal, Darwish would have served a full term as political bureau chief, while key responsibilities were divided among other senior leaders, including Mashal and al-Hayya. The plan collapsed, intensifying the rivalry ahead of the vote.

[6
