Is Rain During Sukkot a Sign of Curse?

AA

Question

Shalom, honorable Rabbi!

I understand that rain during the festival of Sukkot is not a good sign. I wanted to ask: why is this not a good sign? After all, rain is a sign of blessing? Thank you in advance!

Answer

Shalom u'vracha,

Rain during Sukkot is a sign of curse, as it indicates that Hashem is not pleased and does not want our fulfillment of the mitzvah of the sukkah, driving us away from our sukkot.

In the Mishnah, there is a parable to illustrate this: It is like a servant who comes to pour a cup for his master, and the master pours the cup over his face, saying, "I do not desire your service."

However, some say that rain is only a sign of curse on the first night of Sukkot, since one is obligated to eat a k'zayit of bread in the sukkah. But during the rest of the holiday, rain is neither a sign of blessing nor a sign of curse, because one is not obligated to eat bread, and can eat other foods outside the sukkah. (See the book Chazon Ovadia on Sukkot, p. 180).

In my humble opinion, the heavens are weeping for the health of our esteemed Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, of blessed memory, who has weakened exactly at the time of the rains, on Shabbat of Chol HaMoed Sukkot. We must strengthen ourselves in prayer for his swift recovery, amen.

With wishes for a happy holiday,
Menashe Ben Porat
