How to Kosher a Meaty Oven for Dairy and Vice Versa?

AA

Question

Hello Rabbi,

if I baked meat in the oven, and then I need to bake something dairy - what should I do? Once, I was told that I need to clean the oven, wait 24 hours, and then run it at the highest heat. Some said that only 15 minutes is needed and others said it should be an hour and a half, and regarding the requirement of waiting 24 hours - some said it's not mandatory, and the most important thing is the high heat. I come from a Sephardi background.

Answer

Greetings and blessings.

Indeed, according to the letter of the law, there is room for leniency to simply ignite the oven for a certain period of about half an hour, more or less, and that is sufficient. It is advisable to be stringent and wait 24 hours. It is always necessary to clean the oven properly between meat and dairy.

With blessings,

Benjamin Shmueli
