Is it Permissible to Purchase Items on the 17th of Tammuz?
Question
Hello and blessings, I would like to ask whether it is permissible to buy items on the 17th of Tammuz. I understand that some are stringent not to purchase anything from Rosh Chodesh Av, but is it allowed to buy on the fast of the 17th of Tammuz?
Answer
Hello and blessings,
According to the law, it is permitted to buy on the 17th of Tammuz, including large items of joy. (Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De'ah 218:2, and see there in the Mishnah Berurah 218:7).
From Rosh Chodesh Av until Tisha B'Av, it is specifically forbidden to purchase large items that bring joy to a person, such as: a car for a trip, a table and chairs for the living room, sofas, and so on. However, it is permitted to buy small items, such as: dishes, utensils, and similar items. (Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De'ah 239:2. Chazon Ovadiah, Four Fast Days, p. 167).
