Reciting Tachanun After Sunset

AA

Question

The sun set at 4:36 PM. Is it permissible to say Tachanun at 4:45 PM? Thank you very much.

Answer

Greetings,

According to the opinion of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, of blessed memory, it is permissible to recite Tachanun until thirteen and a half minutes after sunset as usual (Responsa Yabia Omer, part 6, section 7). Thus, according to his opinion, it is permissible to say Tachanun at the time you specified.

However, the custom of Ashkenazim in Israel and in most places abroad is not to recite Tachanun after sunset (see the book Piskei Teshuvot, section 139, note 13).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
