Visiting a Cemetery during Chol HaMoed

AA

Question

With G-d's help, on the 12th of Tishrei 5778. Hello, is there a prohibition against visiting a cemetery during Chol HaMoed? Thank you very much.

Answer

Hello,

One does not visit graves during Chol HaMoed, as these days are also considered Yom Tov (see Gishrei HaChaim, Part 1, Chapter 29, Section 5).

However, in cases of need, such as to pray for a sick person, it is permitted to go (see the Admor of Monkotsh zt”l in his book Divrei Torah, First Edition, Paragraph 96. Also see Responsa Be'er Sharim, Part 4, Section 8, Paragraph 7).

It is also permissible to go to the graves of tzaddikim (righteous individuals) in order to pray (Yalkut Yosef, Mourning, Section 40, Paragraph 25).

Best regards,

Hillel Meiris
