Question

Hello and blessings, what does it mean when we say that merit is granted through the guilty? Thank you in advance.

Answer

Hello and blessings

The Talmud teaches that merit is caused by the righteous and obligation by the guilty. This means that when a positive decree is made upon someone, such as that they should receive a certain amount of money, Hashem arranges for it to come through a good person, someone worthy of receiving the mitzvah of kindness. Conversely, when a person is destined for suffering, Hashem arranges for it to come through an evil person.

Best regards,

Benjamin Shmuel
