Regarding the Timing of the Blessing Asher Yatzar

AA

Question

Hello esteemed Rabbi, I would like to ask how long after leaving the restroom I can wait to recite the blessing of Asher Yatzar. I would appreciate your detailed response. Thank you in advance.

Answer

Greetings,

Ideally, one should recite Asher Yatzar immediately after leaving the restroom (after washing hands). If one did not recite it immediately, according to Ashkenazi custom, one may recite it as long as one has not yet felt the need to relieve oneself again (see Mishnah Berurah, Orach Chaim 7:1). According to the opinion of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, zt"l, one may recite it until seventy-two minutes have passed, unless one has felt the need to relieve oneself again, in which case one should wait to recite until after using the restroom (Shut Yabia Omer, Vol. 4, 2020 edition, pp. 20-21).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
