Women
What are the Commandments for a Woman?
Question
Hello, I would like to ask: What are the commandments for a woman? Thank you very much.
Answer
Hello,
A Jewish woman is obligated to fulfill all the commandments of Judaism, except for most of those commandments that are time-bound. I will outline the general commandments that accompany a Jewish woman from morning until evening. These include:
1. Performing the ritual washing of hands in the morning.
2. Dressing modestly in modest clothing, and covering the hair with a wig or another covering.
3. Reciting the morning blessings and one prayer during the day, either Shacharit (morning prayer) or Minchah (afternoon prayer).
4. Reciting the appropriate blessings before and after meals or tasting food or drink.
5. Performing the washing of hands before a meal that includes bread.
6. Keeping kosher and avoiding anything that has questionable kashrut.
7. Maintaining distance from unfamiliar men, as well as observing the laws of family purity between her and her husband.
8. Reciting Shema before sleep.
9. Guarding her speech from slander and gossip.
10. Protecting her eyes and ears from indecent matters.
11. Observing Shabbat properly, lighting candles before Shabbat, and reciting Kiddush over wine during Shabbat. As it is essential to fulfill all these commandments, one should set aside a daily study session in a halachic book like 'Kitzur Shulchan Aruch' and learn gradually how to uphold all of the above.
