What to Read First, Tikkun Chatzot or Kriat Shema on the Bed?
Question
Hello, honored Rabbi,
If a person is awake at midnight, what is the order of things they should read? Kriat Shema first or Tikkun Chatzot?
Thank you very much
Answer
Hello,
One should read Tikkun Chatzot before Kriat Shema on the bed. However, Rabbi Chaim Palagi zt"l wrote in his book Kaf Hachaim (Siman 3, Seif 29) that someone who stays up all night and it comes time to say Tikkun Chatzot should recite Kriat Shema before saying Tikkun Chatzot. This is in accordance with the custom of Sephardim who say Kriat Shema on the bed (without the concluding blessing) even when they are awake all night, as noted by the Ben Ish Chai (Year 1, Parashat Pekudei, Seif 14).
Best regards,
