Is There a Problem with Spider Webs in the Home?

AA

Question

Is there an authoritative source in halacha or Kabbalah that states the presence of spider webs brings disputes? Are there other insights on this topic? I would appreciate your response.

Answer

Greetings and blessings,

Yes. Thus wrote the holy Gaon Rabbi Yeshayah Halevi in his holy book, the Shlah [Tractate Shabbat - Chapter Candle of Mitzvah, section 4]:

"The author of Roshit Chochmah wrote in the book Tza'ot Chaim the following, my teacher, of blessed memory, stated that one should remove spider webs from the house on the eve of Shabbat, for the secret of the allusion, and one should prepare the house with burning candles and a laid table, so it is said. And I will be a gossip and reveal his secret; you have already known if you merit to witness the pleasantness of Hashem, the allusion of the verse 'In all My house, he is faithful' (Numbers 12:7), for the kingdom is called a house as explained in the books of Kabbalah.

It is well-known about her that it is said, 'like a rose among thorns,' that around the wicked they walk, and they are a secret of the kelipot (evil forces) who desire to prevent peace in the home, and they are the spiders which need to be removed from the home, which is a secret to remove the abominations from the land that is the upper land. Especially on the holy Shabbat, which is the secret of the attribute of sovereignty, and for this reason, Shabbat is called 'Queen.'

And also is called a bride opposite the final attribute which includes all the upper lights that shine towards her face, and for this, the Shabbat candles hint at the duality of 'remember' and 'observe' as mentioned in the Beheir, 'Remember for the male and observe for the female,' which is the secret of the unity of the upper lights, in the secret of 'And I will give 'peace' in the land, as the Kabbalists wrote that it hints at the attribute of foundation and sovereignty. Therefore, the candles are called 'peace' 'home.' And the words are clarified to those who have merited to enjoy the radiance of the light of the wisdom of Kabbalah. From this, we conclude that it is very sweet to adhere to this custom to remove abominations from the house and to repair it with candles and a laid table."

Thus writes the Ben Ish Chai [Laws of the Second Year - Parashat Lech Lecha]:

"It is good to remove spider webs from the house every holy Shabbat eve, in order to drive away the kelipah, and Rabbi Kaf HaChaim of blessed memory wrote from tradition that it is preferable to do this before Chatzot (midday) specifically."

Wishing you success - Menashe Israel
