The Abundance of Books
Question
Why are there so many textbooks and halachic works? Can't one simply learn everything from the Torah?
Answer
Greetings and blessings. It is said about the Gaon of Vilna that toward the end of his life, he studied only the Torah, and from the Torah he would derive all the halachot and all the Gemara sugyot, reviewing each in its proper place. However, an average person finds it very difficult to find within the Torah all the halachot and all the Gemara topics, and therefore studies everything through the other books. In the Torah itself, most of the halachot are not explicit; everything is only hinted at, and many matters have only slight allusions. This is besides all the rabbinic commandments which do not appear in the Torah. See also here on the Oral Torah. Wishing you success, Binyamin Shmueli
