Information About Demons, Spirits, Satan, and the Holy Spirit
Question
I would like to know about the topics in the title: How does it happen? How can one identify a case where a person is possessed by a spirit or a demon? What does the number 666 mean in Judaism? Does Satan exist, and if so, what is he or who is he? What is Hashem's purpose in creating or allowing the existence of such entities? If one encounters such a case, how should we respond or deal with the situation? Also, if possible, I would like some information about the Holy Spirit and whether such a thing even exists, and if so, what exactly it is.
Answer
Hello and blessings. A case where an external spirit enters a living person is identified by very unusual behavior, as well as the emergence of strange sounds from the body, which are not under the person's control. Such spirits are the souls of deceased individuals who, because of their actions during their lifetime, are unable to ascend and unite with the supreme root from which human souls were carved. Thus, they wander in a spiritual dimension called the "Kaf HaKela" or in a spiritual realm called the "World of Chaos", finding no rest there. Furthermore, each such spirit is accompanied by two malevolent angels that cause it distress and great suffering. Therefore, the spirit seeks some temporary rest, which it finds by entering the body of a living person. Of course, it does not receive permission to do so, except very rarely, as a result of a certain connection with a particular living individual, combined with that person's actions having removed protections that guard against such occurrences. There were great righteous individuals whose primary expertise was in this area; by means of prayers and rectifications for the possessed spirit, they would persuade the spirit to depart from the person, and indeed this was achieved. You can find historical accounts of dybbuk stories and their removal. The number 666 in Judaism is indeed a special number. Some righteous scholars, based on various passages in the Zohar, believed that in our sixth millennium year 666 [the Hebrew year 5666] redemption will occur. There is a secret in Kabbalah called "B’Vav Vav Vav Tat Kaf Tet Resh" which we will not elaborate on here on the internet, though other interpretations of the Zohar's words exist. Satan certainly exists; he is the evil inclination, part of which exists in every person. Without Satan enticing a person toward evil, creation would have no value, because the purpose of creation is that human souls merit their eternal reward as a result of their deeds in this world. Good deeds have no value unless there is an inclination in a person to do otherwise. Only through the constant struggle between good and evil, and the choice of good, does a person gain happiness in this world and the next. Regarding the Holy Spirit, there are many levels. During the time of the Temple, the concept called "prophecy" was prevalent, where the soul of a worthy person was connected to the lowest rank of angels called "Ishim" and was thus informed of future events. The prophet’s soul experienced spiritual delight during prophecy, beyond description or imagination. The Holy Spirit in lower ranks also existed later; through the holy spirit hovering over them, they would see not only the physical body of the person before them but also their inner soul and their role in the world. Even in the last generation, a few famous righteous individuals possessed the Holy Spirit, with almost nothing hidden from their eyes. It is well known and famous about the Baba Sali zt”l and the Belzer Rebbe Rabbi Aharon zt”l, who could read all of a person’s thoughts as if from a written text. I would be happy to assist you with any further questions you might have. Wishing you success and a good month – Menashe Israel.
