Question

What is the source for the claim that some of the people of the generation of the dispersion who sinned were also turned into elephants? Thank you.

Answer

Greetings,

Indeed, it is written in Tractate Sanhedrin (page 89a) that the men of the generation of the dispersion were divided into three classes, etc., and regarding the one who said “Let us go up and make war”, they became monkeys, spirits, demons, and night creatures, etc. This source does not mention elephants.

However, this is brought in Seder HaDorot (the year 1133) quoted from Sefer HaYashar, which states that those who said “Let us go up to the heavens” became monkeys and elephants. And by elephants, it means elephants, as Rashi explains (Chronicles II 9:21) that “elephants” refers to an elephant’s tooth and the elephant itself.

Similarly, it is written in the commentary Melachet Shlomo on the Mishnayot, Tractate Kilayim (chapter 8, mishnah 6), where I heard from a pious and Kabbalist sage, Rabbi Meshulam, of blessed memory, regarding the statement in Brachos (page 58b), that one who sees an elephant, a monkey, or a baboon says “Blessed is the One Who forms creatures,” and it is difficult to understand what difference there is since all creatures differ in their forms one from another. He explained that in the time of the generation of the Flood, Hashem exacted retribution on the people, turning them into monkeys and elephants, which is to say that the monkey resembles a human being and the elephant is capable of understanding the language of humans.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
