A Thousand for Battle, A Thousand for Prayer
Question
Where is it written in the Torah about one of the wars where he took a thousand men for each thousand? (I might not be exact. Maybe it's a hundred for each hundred..) The goal is to arrive at the interpretation I heard that half will fight and half will pray for success.
Answer
Greetings,
The verse is in the Book of Numbers (Chapter 31, Verse 4) "A thousand for each tribe of Israel you shall send to the army," and it is said in the Midrash Rabbah there (Section 22, Paragraph 3) that for every thousand men who went out to fight, a thousand stayed back to pray for them.
Regards,
Hillel Meirs.
