Regarding the Saying "One Who Eats Fish on Fish Day Is Saved from Fish"
Question
Hello honorable Rabbi, what is the source of the saying "One who eats fish on fish day is saved from fish"? Thank you very much!!! And Shabbat Shalom!!!
Answer
Dear Sir,
The source of this saying is found in the words of Rabbi Yaakov Rakach, of blessed memory, a sage of Tripoli who lived from 1860 to 1891, in his book "Shulchan Lechem HaPanim" (Siman 248, 'HaRav') where he wrote: "And on this our Sages hinted, 'One who eats fish on fish day is saved from fish,' meaning that 'fish day' signifies Shabbat, for fish is represented by the letter Zayin, thus 'saved from fish' means saved from Gehenom (hell)." Also see in "She'elot u'Teshuvot Mayim Chayim," Part I (Siman 161, 'VaEfrayim').
Blessings, Hillel Meirs
