Order of Asking Forgiveness from a Deceased Person

AA

Question

What is the order of asking forgiveness when the person seeking forgiveness wants to come to the place where the deceased is buried? What should the person asking for forgiveness and those present say? Thank you.

Answer

Greetings, One should go to the grave of the deceased barefoot with ten people and stand them on his grave. He then says, "I have sinned against the God of Israel and against so-and-so, to whom I have sinned" (and one may specify the sin, but if specifying it would cause disrespect to the deceased, then one should not specify). The ten people then respond to him by saying three times, "Forgive me, forgive me."

Sources: Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim (Siman 430, S'if 2) and Mishnah Berurah there, and Kitzur Shulchan Aruch (Siman 131, S'if 5).

Blessings, Hillel Meirs
