Is It Permissible to Pray Without Shoes?

AA

Question

Is it true that one is forbidden to pray without shoes?

Answer

Peace and blessings,

One should not recite the Amidah prayer without shoes. This is brought in the Yalkut Yosef as a summary of Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, Siman 91.

It is not proper to pray the Shemoneh Esrei barefoot, especially without socks. Ideally, one should put on their shoes before prayer. If this is difficult for some reason, one may pray wearing slippers. Similarly, on Tisha B'Av and Yom Kippur, it is permitted to pray wearing slippers, provided they are not made of leather.

With blessing,

Binyamin Shmueli
