Is it Permissible to Eat Before Dawn?

AA

Question

Hello,

I work as a security guard 5-6 nights a week from 11:00 PM until 7:00 AM. I have the opportunity to study Torah at my post, and I try to increase my Torah study as much as possible. My question is how to conduct oneself regarding the night order. Reciting Kriyat Shema in bed: I understand the time is half an hour before midnight. What exactly should be recited? All the verses from "L'shem Yichud" until the end, or only the Kriyat Shema itself? Also, is it permitted to eat after reciting Kriyat Shema? I pray Shacharit at 7:30 AM. Usually, I have a small meal before dawn, 72 minutes before. Is it okay to eat? Or is it forbidden to eat at all after Kriyat Shema? Thank you very much. Tzion Chai Kashani

Answer

Greetings,

1. The custom of Sephardim is to recite Kriyat Shema in bed (except for the blessing of Hamapil) before midnight, even when intending to remain awake all night (Ben Ish Chai, Year 1, Parashat Pekudei, note 14). According to Ashkenazi custom, there is no need to recite it at all.

2. It is permitted to eat fruits, vegetables, and similar items, as well as to drink (non-alcoholic beverages) without limitation until dawn. However, it is forbidden to begin eating a substantial meal (such as bread or significant grain-based foods exceeding the size of an egg) from half an hour before dawn (see Mishnah Berurah, siman 87, seif katan 27).

Blessings, Hillel Meirs
