Until What Time Can a Woman Pray Shacharit?

AA

Question

Until what time can one pray the Shacharit (morning) prayer (woman - Sephardic) and until what time can one recite the Shema?

Thank you!!!!

Answer

Greetings,

1. A Sephardic woman is required to pray only one prayer each day, and she can choose which prayer to recite, although it is preferable for her to choose the Shacharit prayer (Shut Yabia Omer, part 6, part Orach Chaim, section 17).

If a woman chooses to pray Shacharit, she should ensure to pray before the end of the time allocated for prayer, meaning 4 seasonal hours from the beginning of the day. One should check a calendar for their area to determine when this occurs (as it varies from place to place and day to day). If she has not prayed by then, she can still pray the Shemonah Esrei until noon. However, this is considered a prayer that is not in it's designated time.

2. A woman is exempt from reciting the Shema, but it is appropriate for her to recite it in order to accept the yoke of Heaven (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, section 1, clause a), and she should at least recite the Baruch Shem Kevod.." etc. (Levush there), although she is not required to pay attention to the timing of the Shema recitation (Ashal Avraham of Budshattsh there).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
