I Remembered Mid-Meal That I Hadn’t Made a Blessing; Is There Value in Saying One?

AA

Question

Shalom esteemed Rabbi,

I constantly forget to make a blessing over my food and only recall in the middle of the meal. Is it worthwhile to make a blessing after I have already eaten? Or should I refrain?

Thank you very much

Answer

Shalom,

One must make a blessing, for as the Sages said (Berachot 35a), it is forbidden for a person to derive benefit from this world without a blessing. Therefore, you cannot continue to eat without making a blessing. While certainly making the blessing at this point will not rectify or exempt the food already consumed, at the very least, it will exempt the food you intend to continue eating.

Wishing you much success,

Hillel Meirs
