What should be done with the placenta after childbirth?

Hello Rabbi, I understand that there are hospitals that take the placenta for research or medications. My question is: what should be done with the placenta? Should it be buried? Or is it acceptable to donate it for research? If there is a need to bury the placenta, is there supervision over the hospitals that carry this out?

Some require burial for various reasons. For most poskim, there is no obligation of burial according to the strict law, and therefore there is no need to make an effort in this matter.
