How is it permitted to eat tuna fish?

AA

Question

Tuna fish do not have scales, and they have fins. According to halacha, both are required, so how is it that we eat tuna fish if it has no scales? Thank you

Answer

Shalom uveracha,

There are varieties of tuna fish that have scales while they are in the water, and over time the scales fall off while they are still in the water. According to the halacha in Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah (siman 83, seif 1), fish whose scales have fallen off while they were still in the water are also kosher for eating.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
