Is it permitted to use the broken pieces of the wedding glass?

Friends asked me to inquire on their behalf. After the groom broke the glass, the bride’s cousin decided to make them a mezuzah and a hamsa from the broken pieces of the glass. Is it permitted/correct to use the broken glass from the wedding for a mezuzah? Recently, this has become "customary."
