Blessings Before Eating

AA

Question

Shalom, I have a question about the blessings before eating.

For example:

1. If I eat a plate with rice together with pea sauce and with meat/chicken, what should I recite? In other words, is there one blessing that exempts me from saying the other blessings, or do I need to say a blessing for each type of food on the plate? And if so, what is the order of the blessings? If possible, I would also be glad if you could tell me whether this also applies to a stir-fry plate containing vegetables, pasta, and chicken breast in soy sauce. Thank you very much

Answer

Shalom u-vrachah

One should recite mezonot on the rice and shehakol on the chicken. If the chicken is in small pieces and mixed thoroughly together with the rice, then one recites only one blessing. If the majority is the rice, one recites mezonot, and if the majority is the meat, one recites shehakol.

A stir-fry plate in which pasta is also mixed in has the blessing of mezonot for the entire plate.

With blessings,

Benjamin Shmueli
