If I woke up after the time for Shema, when can I put on tefillin?

AA

Question

Hello, honorable rabbi,
If, unfortunately, I woke up on Friday after the morning time for Shema had already passed (at 11:00), when can I put on tefillin? At Mincha before Kabbalat Shabbat in synagogue, or should I say Mincha by myself and then not pray afterward at the Mincha service in synagogue? Or is there another possibility?
Thank you

Answer

Hello,

If you woke up at 11:00 in the morning, the proper time for Shacharit has indeed passed, but it is still possible to pray Shacharit after its appointed time (until midday). Therefore, put on tefillin immediately and pray the entire Shacharit service except for the blessings of Kriat Shema.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
