How to Reconcile the 48 Prophets with Elisha Hiding 100 Prophets

AA

Question

It is known that 48 prophets stood for Israel. If so, how does this fit with the account of Elisha, who hid 100 prophets of Israel from Queen Jezebel? Thank you.

Answer

Peace and blessings

As it is written in the Talmud (Megillah 14a): "It was taught: Many prophets arose for Israel, double the number of those who left Egypt; but only the prophecy needed for future generations was written down, and that which was not needed was not written down." It should be noted that prophecy is not specifically foretelling the future. Prophecy is a term for divine attachment, with the bodily powers and senses being extended, and for connection with the divine spirit that prophesied through them, in spiritual insights perceived by their souls. This is explained at length by the Rambam in Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah regarding the meaning of prophecy.

The forty-eight prophets whose prophecy was written are the distinguished among the prophets, from whose prophecy there is instruction for future generations. These are the 48 prophets [as explained in Seder Olam, and brought by Rashi there] whose prophecy was preserved until our day: 1. Avraham. 2. Yitzchak. 3. Yaakov. 4. Moshe. 5. Aharon. 6. Yehoshua. 7. Pinchas. [Judges 2:1] 8. Elkanah. [I Samuel 2:27] 9. Eli. 10. Shmuel the prophet. 11. Gad the seer. [I Chronicles 29:29] 12. Natan the prophet. 13. David. 14. Shlomo. 15. Iddo. [I Kings 13:1] 16. Mikhayhu son of Imlah.

[I Kings 22:8] 17. Ovadiah the prophet. 18. Ahijah the Shilonite. [I Kings 11:29] 19. Yehu son of Chanani. [I Kings 16:1] 20. Azaryah son of Oded. [II Chronicles 15:1] 21. Yehaziel son of Zechariah. [II Chronicles 20:14] 22. Eliezer son of Dodavahu. [II Chronicles 20:37] 23. Hoshea son of Beeri. 24. Amos. 25. Michah the Morashti. 26. Amotz. [II Chronicles 25:15] 27. Eliyahu the prophet.

28. Elisha the prophet. 29. Yonah son of Amittai. 30. Yeshayahu. 31. Yoel. 32. Nachum the Elkoshite. 33. Chavakuk. 34. Tzefanyah. 35. Uriah son of Shemaiah. [Jeremiah 26:20] 36. Yirmeyahu. 37. Yechezkel. 38. Shemayah. [I Kings 12:22] 39. Baruch. 40. Neriah. 41. Serayah. 42. Machseiyah. 43. Chaggai. 44. Zechariah. 45. Malachi. 46. Mordechai Bilshan. We will need to find the two missing ones among this list: 1. Asir. 2. Elkanah. 3. Aviassaf. 4. Asaf. 5. Heman. 6. Eitan the Ezrahite. 7. Yedutun. 8. Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. [II Chronicles 24:20] 9. Daniel. 10. Chanani the seer. [II Chronicles 16:7]. 11. Oded [II Chronicles 28:9]. And there are several other suggestions in the sacred books. That is enough - Menashe Yisrael
