Is it permitted to eat a pareve cake baked in a meat oven with milk?

Question

Hello and blessings,

I am a bit confused about meat and milk in an oven. We baked a pareve cake immediately after roasting chicken. Can the cake be eaten with dairy, such as coffee and the like? Is the cake considered meat? I would appreciate a detailed explanation on the matter.

Blessings and success

Answer

Greetings,

According to Ashkenazi custom, it is forbidden to eat the cake with milk (see Rema, Yoreh Deah, section 95, subsection 2), while according to Sephardi custom, if the oven was clean, it is permitted to eat it with milk (see responsa Yabia Omer, volume 9, Yoreh Deah, section 4).

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
