Prayers a Woman Is Obligated to Say

AA

Question

Shalom, honored rabbi.

What prayers is a woman obligated to say? Is she obligated to say the entire Shacharit, Mincha, and Arvit, both on weekdays and on Shabbat? I would appreciate more detail, please, honored rabbi.

Thank you very much.

Answer

Shalom and blessings,

These are the parts of prayer that a woman is obligated, or preferably should, say each day. There is no difference between Shabbat and a weekday:

A. Every woman is obligated to recite Birkot HaShachar, including Birkot HaTorah. (Shulchan Aruch, end of siman 47).

B. It is preferable for every woman to recite Keriat Shema, so that she accepts upon herself the yoke of the kingdom of Heaven. If she does not have time to recite the entire Keriat Shema, she should at least recite the first verse of Shema. However, this is not obligatory. (Shulchan Aruch, siman 70, seif 1).

C. Every woman is obligated to recite only one Amidah prayer each day. It is preferable that this be in Shacharit. (Shulchan Aruch, siman 106, seif 1. Yalkut Yosef, part 1, pp. 184-185).

With blessings,
Menashe ben Porat
