On which days do we read from the Torah during Minchah?

AA

Question

During the Shabbat Minchah prayer, we read from the Torah the first section of the coming week’s parashah. What are the six other days on which we read from the Torah at Minchah, and what do they have in common?

Answer

Greetings,

We read from the Torah at Minchah on Tishah B'Av (Rema, Orach Chaim, siman 559, section 4) and at Minchah on Yom Kippur (there, siman 622, section 2), as well as on the other public fasts, namely Tzom Gedaliah, the Tenth of Tevet, Ta'anit Esther, and the Seventeenth of Tammuz (see there, siman 566, section 1). All of them are intended primarily to arouse the people to repentance (see Mishnah Berurah, siman 622, subparagraph 7).

With blessing,

Hillel Meirs
