Question

Until when is it customary to dip challah in honey and refrain from eating grapes, nuts, and sour foods? Thank you

Answer

Shalom,

1. Some have the custom to dip a piece of hamotzi bread in honey until Simchat Torah, and some followed this practice until Shabbat Bereshit. This applies at Shabbat and Yom Tov meals, as well as on Erev Yom Kippur and Hoshana Rabbah, but they were not particular about this at weekday meals and during Chol HaMoed (see Piskei Teshuvot, siman 583, letter c).

2. Even those who have the custom not to eat grapes on Rosh Hashanah (see Mishnah Berurah, siman 603, seif katan 4) mean specifically on Rosh Hashanah itself; afterward, there is no such restriction at all.

3. One may eat nuts immediately after Rosh Hashanah. However, some have the custom to refrain until after Simchat Torah (see Piskei Teshuvot, siman 583, letter g).

4. Likewise (see there, letter f).

A good final sealing,

Hillel Meiris
