Buying Clothing During the Nine Days When There Is a Possible Loss

AA

Question

Hello, Rabbi. I am a haredi Beit Yaakov student, and I wanted to ask: if there is a sale that lowers the prices very significantly, it began a few weeks before the month of Av and will continue for several days after the Nine Days, but there is doubt whether the items and sizes will still be available after such a long period, may the needed items be purchased during the Nine Days? Thank you, and have a good day!

Answer

Hello, It is permitted to buy clothing, etc. during the Nine Days in such a case, when it is a possible loss, because there is concern that you will not find them after Tishah BAv. However, the clothing should not be worn until after the Nine Days. Sources: See Nitei Gavriel, Laws of the Three Weeks, Part 1 (chapter 31, section 14). See also She’eilat Uteshuvot Machazeh Eliyahu, Part 2 (siman 35). With blessing, Hillel Meirs
