Does Someone Who Stayed Awake All Night Need to Recite Kriat Shema Al HaMitah?

AA

Question

Hello, honored rabbi.

If I stayed awake all night and went to sleep in the morning hours after daybreak, do I need to recite Kriat Shema al HaMitah?

Thank you.

Answer

Hello,

No. However, according to the custom of Sephardim, even one who stayed awake all night says Kriyat Shema al HaMitah a short while before midnight (Ben Ish Hai, Year 1, Parashat Pekudei, letter 14), but one should not recite the blessing of HaMapil.

With blessing,

Hillel Meirs
