Prayer and Blessings
What blessing is recited over bean soup?
Question
Hello to you,
First question: On Shabbat, are we obligated to eat bread at the three meals, and if one does not eat bread, is it nevertheless permitted to recite Birkat Hamazon at length?
Second question: over bean soup, do we recite Borai Pri Haadamah?
Thank you very much in advance.
Answer
Hello and blessings
Indeed, one is obligated to eat an olive-bulk of bread at the three meals, and ideally one should eat the volume of an egg. These amounts are not large: an olive-bulk is about half of a machine-made slice of bread, and an egg-bulk is approximately a whole slice. After the fact, at the third meal it is possible to suffice with cake, and if that is not possible, fruit is enough. And if one does not eat bread, indeed one cannot recite anything other than the blessing appropriate to the food one ate. And the blessing over beans is Borai Pri Haadamah.
