Is It Possible to Make a Siyum on the Tanakh?
Question
Shalom,
Can one make a siyum on the Tanakh? If so, how?
Thank you very much
Answer
Shalom,
One may make a siyum even on one of the twenty-four holy books if one studied it with understanding and with a kosher commentary, and all the more so one may make a siyum on the entire Tanakh.
It is the same text as for a siyum on a tractate, except that wherever the wording of the siyum on a certain tractate mentions that tractate, one should say the name of the book instead; likewise, במקום לומר וזכות כל התנאים והאמוראים, one should say, וזכות כל הנביאים.
Sources: See Penei Yehoshua in Berachot (17a), who wrote that Rabbi Yochanan used to make a siyum meal when he completed the Book of Iyov. See there. Similarly, the Minchat Patim (Yoreh Deah, end of siman 246) wrote that the same applies to a siyum on one of the twenty-four holy books, that it is a seudat mitzvah, and he cited the words of the above-mentioned Penei Yehoshua. See there. Also see the book Piskei Teshuvah (siman 194), which brought that the great tzaddik, Rabbi Y. of Kotna, of blessed memory, used to eat meat on the night after Tisha B'Av on the basis of a siyum on the Megillat Eicha that he studied on Tisha B'Av. See there. In Igrot Moshe, Orach Chaim, part 1 (siman 157), it was written that if they studied Scripture in a group for some time and completed a book with depth, it is no worse than any mitzvah that calls for a feast and rejoicing, and it is considered a seudat mitzvah. But it is obvious that this is only when they studied according to a true commentary, one of the commentaries of the early authorities, and not according to commentaries from ordinary people, most of which are fabrications and not true, and many are also akin to distorting the Torah unlawfully. See there. Also see there in Orach Chaim part 2 (siman 12). And see also Responsa HaElef Lecha Shlomo (siman 386) and Responsa Mishneh Halachot, part 6 (siman 166).
With blessing,
Hillel Meirs
