Is it permitted to recite Psalms after Shema before bed?

AA

Question

Hello,

May one recite chapters of Psalms (on Friday night, for example) after reciting Shema before bed?

Thank you!

Answer

Shalom uvracha,

No, as the Rema wrote (section 239, paragraph 1): one does not eat or drink, and one does not speak, after reciting Shema before retiring to bed, rather one should go to sleep immediately, as it is stated (Psalms 4:5): "Say in your hearts upon your beds, and be silent forever."

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
