How Was Hashem Created?
Why Did Hashem Create Us?
Question
Hello,
I would like to know: how was Hashem created, and why did He create us?
Answer
In the name of Hashem Hello and blessings,
Hashem was never created, because Hashem is not subject to time. Hashem is above time, and therefore exists without any change at all - without aging, without movement, from everlasting to everlasting. For He is infinite. We are limited beings dependent on time - and therefore we need a Creator. Everything limited needs a Creator. But Hashem is not limited at all. He is not a body, and therefore does not need someone to create Him. He is above time, and for Him there is no past, present, or future, but He is present in every place and in all times, for He is infinite. You asked why Hashem created man? Your question can also be called "the question of all questions," and therefore it is clear that the answer is complex and will not be understood at first glance. I will try to describe it in stages:
1. Evil, as is known, always stems from lack (selfishness, personal need), therefore evil by nature takes from others.
2. Good stems from wholeness, therefore good always gives.
3. One who is infinite and perfect has no evil and no lacks. Since He is perfect, He must be good and benevolent.
4. Therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, created the world, the animals, and unlike them the angels, in order to give them of His eternal goodness.
5. But the true good of the Holy One, blessed be He, is closeness to Him. For He, may He be blessed, is the source of good. He is the eternal infinity.
6. In order to draw close to the Creator - one must resemble Him. One who resembles Him most is closest to Him most. Only one who is close to the Holy One, blessed be He, will be able to enjoy true and eternal abundance.
7. This resemblance to the Creator of the world cannot be based on falsehood or imagination, because Hashem is truth, and closeness to Him comes from true resemblance to Him, may He be blessed. Therefore counterfeit and illusion cannot connect the created being to Hashem.
8. Therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, created a unique creature called man. Man alone was given a divine soul that is most like the Holy One, blessed be He, and thus he was given the ability to create and destroy by the power of Hashem. Even the angels do not have the ability to resemble Hashem as man does. Our Sages said regarding this in the Gemara that Hashem fills the entire world just as the soul fills the entire body.
9. All creatures in the world receive the goodness of Hashem without choice, even the highest angels. Therefore their closeness to Hashem is limited, because they are not like Him. Upon man was placed the greatest task - to resemble the Holy One, blessed be He, by the power of his own free choice, which comes directly from Hashem. Man must choose by his own powers truth, in order to resemble Hashem and merit His eternal closeness.
10. Therefore man was placed in a world of darkness and trials; he was given a good inclination and an evil inclination, a divine desire for spiritual meaning, and a soul-level attraction to materiality. Through the Torah, man learns to combine spirit and matter, and to resemble Hashem. The highest resemblance to Hashem is to do good as He does, without asking for compensation. Just as Hashem receives nothing from man, so the greatest resemblance to Him will be through self-sacrifice and the fulfillment of mitzvot lishmah, not for the sake of receiving reward. This is the highest level of closeness to the Holy One, blessed be He, and this is also the greatest power that exists in the soul given to man: the power of love. The meaning of man’s life is love. And thus Hashem revealed in His holy Torah (Deuteronomy 6:5): "And you shall love Hashem your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might" (even if He takes your money, even if He takes your life - love Him with all your heart. This is the meaning of your life on earth). The divine purpose was to reveal Himself to man, in order to give him the manufacturer’s instructions for what is good and what is evil, so that the perfect person would achieve the purpose of his life and merit the World to Come. The purpose of creation was to establish a nation that would fulfill Hashem’s will and merit true good. But most of the nations of the world did not seek Hashem and did not want to sacrifice for Him. Hashem chose the people of Israel because the people of Israel wanted Him, and because of their forefathers. The primary purpose of Hashem was to establish the perfect man who fulfills His Torah, and therefore the people of Israel are the chosen nation, so that anyone who seeks Hashem may join them. And thus it is said in the Torah: "And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation" (Exodus 19:6). Israel is the divine kingdom, and the prophets prophesied that when the complete redemption arrives, all the nations of the world will recognize the truth and live in world peace. Divine love and unity - this is the meaning of life.
With blessings, Daniel Bels
