Is it permissible to move to a new apartment during the Three Weeks?
Question
Shalom Rabbi, I wanted to ask if it is permitted to move to a new apartment during the Three Weeks?
And is it allowed to buy new furniture for the apartment?
This question is for the custom of Sephardim.
Thank you in advance
Answer
Shalom Rav,
Before Rosh Chodesh Av - it is permitted. And from Rosh Chodesh Av, if it is for necessary living arrangements and not for embellishment or comfort - it is permitted. One can hold a housewarming by studying Torah only, along with distributing cakes and similar items. The joy of the housewarming should be celebrated after Tisha B'Av, at which point one can wear new clothing and recite the shehechiyanu blessing (Chazon Ovadia, Arcana of the Four Fast Days, page 368).
Regarding furniture, before Rosh Chodesh Av - it is permitted. And from Rosh Chodesh Av, if it is necessary for use - it is permitted .
With blessings,
Hillel Meirs
