Is it Permitted to Immerse Utensils in the Sea?

AA

Question

Hello, esteemed Rabbi, is it possible to immerse utensils in the sea instead of in a mikveh (I am in the process of becoming more observant). Thank you in advance

Answer

Greetings,

It is indeed permitted to immerse utensils in the sea (see for example Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De'ah 195:5). It should be clarified that only new utensils purchased from a non-Jew and that have not absorbed any prohibited substance may be immersed in a mikveh or in the sea. However, utensils that have absorbed forbidden food or drink require koshering through boiling. It is advisable to consult a rabbinic authority to determine what type of koshering is needed for each utensil.

Wishing you much success,

Hillel Meirs
