Why Do We Say "The Best of Doctors Go to Hell"?

The phrase "the best of doctors go to hell" is said by our sages as a point of critique directed at physicians, highlighting how easily they can find themselves in peril. Even the best doctor must be extremely cautious about the consequences of their actions, as they are in close proximity to this fate. According to the explanation of Ramban (Nachmanides), a doctor who heals based solely on his logic, without knowing with certainty that this is indeed the appropriate treatment, is the one destined for hell. Likewise, a doctor who dares to treat patients in areas where someone more qualified exists, only due to personal interests of honor and prestige, without making an effort to consult with the leading expert in the field, is acting irresponsibly. Unfortunately, these types of actions occur daily, leading to bloodshed and human error. Additionally, sometimes a doctor may have the ability to heal a poor person but chooses not to, assuming there is no payment for their services. This phrase serves as a warning that even the best of doctors can fall into grave mistakes that may lead to hell, and they must always consider their situation as if hell is open beneath them, much like the judges of Israel who are also advised to regard their position similarly.
